Face Down

Ezekiel 1:28
All around him was a glowing halo, like a rainbow shining in the clouds on a rainy day. This is what the glory of the LORD looked like to me. When I saw it, I fell face down on the ground, and I heard someone’s voice speaking to me.

In chapter one, Ezekiel was given a vision from the Lord that showed His glory and holiness, and to warn the exiles of sin’s consequences before it was too late. What Ezekiel saw was mesmerizing! Through this vision, Ezekiel learned that God is present everywhere and that God’s activities in heaven are shaping the events on earth.

Have you ever had a vision or a dream seem so real and vivid that you thought it really happened? God spoke to prophets through visions and dreams. Many times, the prophets would have a vision or a dream and go to the people and warn them of what could happen if they didn’t repent and turn back to God. In this verse, God shows His great glory, and Ezekiel falls face down before Him because of how overwhelming His glory is. Ezekiel felt so insignificant and small. In that moment, he realized his own sins and wondered how he could be seeing God’s glory right before his eyes.

Eventually, every person will fall face down before God. They will have to give an account of what they did on earth. The rainbow in this verse shows God’s faithfulness to His people. The rainbow also shows how God will preserve those who remain faithful to Him. The four wheels and four creatures are powerful pictures of judgment. No one can fathom the power of God. Ultimately, the purpose of God’s judgment is to allow perfect peace and righteousness on earth forever.
